About the project
The task in the "Integration Module" (IM) in the summer semester 2022 was the development and implementation of a sculpture as a "landmark" for the
design in the accompanying "Integrative Project" (IP) and as a functional object for the Faculty of Architecture.
After a workshop course in the metal laboratory, in which the basic techniques and relevant machines for processing (cutting - joining - forming) metallic materials were explained, the students developed their own designs under the supervision of Daniel Horn. The focus here was on examining steel as a design material and raising awareness of efficient construction with standardized steel products.
The result was a wide variety of designs from which teachers and students selected the design "OUTBREAK" by Jan Baumhauer, with the aim of realizing it together on a 1:1 scale. The design symbolizes a volcanic eruption in Iceland in an abstract form. The hyperbolic basic shape was divided into surfaces and then into individual rods by means of triangulation.
The parametrically developed, self-supporting sculpture consists of a total of 190 rods with a total length of 80 meters. Each element has an individual position and was assembled and cut to size by the students under the guidance of Daniel Horn in the metal laboratory. Finally, the large structure was joined using inert gas welding equipment.
