Final theses (project work and thesis in Bachelor's and Master's degree programs)
How do you start a thesis?
With the written work at the end of your studies, you show that you are able to work independently on tasks in the field of computer science and to document this in writing in a scientifically appropriate form.
If I supervise your thesis, we will proceed as follows:
- Formulating a topic: Think about the topic you would like to deal with in your thesis. If you are writing the thesis together with or in a company, agree on possible topics there. Make an appointment with me by email so that we can talk about your topic and your thesis. We will then decide whether I am the right supervisor for your work.
- Preparation of a synopsis: Once we have (roughly) decided on the topic, you will work this out in the form of a synopsis. The purpose of the synopsis is to ensure that we have the same understanding of the content and aim of your work. Use the following outline and make sure that points 1 - 4 fit on one (!) A4 page:
a) Topic
- What is the topic of the paper?
b) Motivation
- Why is it useful / interesting to deal with this topic?
c) Problem definition
- What open questions are there on the topic?
d) Objective
- What goal should your work achieve? Which research question should your paper answer?
e) Outline
- How is your paper structured? Present the structure at least up to the second level of the table of contents.
f) Literature
- What are the important sources for your work? List at least three sources. - Coordination of the synopsis: You send me your synopsis by e-mail and receive comments from me also by e-mail. After typically two or three iterations, the synopsis is completed and you can start working on your thesis.
- Writing the thesis: You write your thesis on the basis of the synopsis. The frequency, form and content of further support will be agreed individually.
Requirements for theses
Please use the information in the module handbook and the examination regulations of your study program to find out the requirements for the thesis. It is also a good idea to be familiar with the assessment criteria published by the examination board.

Projects in the context of teaching
Finished projects
HiLF project: Forum systems in teaching
The discussion of specialist topics in a digital forum can be a very good supplement to classroom teaching. In this project, a systematic requirements analysis for forum software in teaching is carried out and documented. The course "Informatics & Society" in the winter semester 2019/20 and in the summer semester 2020 serves as a case study. The analysis result serves in particular as input for the further development of the forum in ILIAS. Duration: 2019/20
HILF project: After the first HiLF project on the topic of "LiveVoting as a link between teaching and learning" came to a successful end in March 2018, measures were taken in this follow-up project to ensure the results are sustainable. These measures relate both to the didactic area and to requirements for the further development of LiveVoting in Ilias. Duration: 2018/19
HiLF project: LiveVoting as a link between teaching and learning
The aim of this project is to further improve the functionality of the LiveVoting plug-in in ILIAS, which was only integrated into the learning environment in August 2016, and to create a didactic concept for use in teaching at Fachhochschule Dortmund. In this way, the use of LiveVoting is to be optimized and facilitated for all lecturers so that it becomes a tool that positively enriches teaching in many courses. Duration: 2017/18
