Dear Hummelfisch reader,
For the 4th issue, we would like to give you a brief overview of the status of some of Fachhochschule Dortmund's current sustainability activities. These are the topics:
- PV systems at Emil-Figge-Straße 38,
- Deposit rings,
- Soffi the mobile sustainability office of Fachhochschule Dortmund
- Sustainability week from 10.06. - 14.06.
- Lecture series on sustainable development
PV systems at Emil-Figge-Straße 38
The first PV system at Fachhochschule Dortmund has now been installed on the roof of Emil-Figge-Str. 38. This is an important step on the way to becoming a climate-friendly university and, in this sense, also sends an important signal to the region. The fact that this has now been achieved was not a "fast track", but a longer process that was shaped in a participatory manner with many participants. The establishment of a PV systems working group and the decision of Department IV in favor of the PV system was followed by the development of a concept for the first implementation, which was approved by the university management. Many legal, commercial and technical challenges had to be overcome in the acquisition and installation of the PV system. The system will now be able to supply the Faculty of Computer Science with electricity from May 2024. The installation will pay off both ecologically and economically in the coming years. We hope to be able to continue the expansion of renewable energies at Fachhochschule Dortmund. Many thanks to all those involved, especially Department IV and the PV systems working group.
Deposit rings
In recent years, it has become apparent that people are dependent on looking for deposits in garbage cans for economic reasons. With deposit rings, we can prevent these people from having to endure a degrading search and risk of injury. The purchase of deposit rings was an idea from the HEP social responsibility focus group. We have now started to install deposit rings on the waste bins at the Emil-Figge-Straße campus and are planning to extend this to the other campuses. Deposit rings do not solve the issues of social justice, but they do make it easier for people to take their unfortunately necessary action.
Soffi the mobile sustainability office at Fachhochschule Dortmund
Under the name "Soffi" (Sustainability Office), the mobile sustainability office of the Fachhochschule Dortmund was officially presented at the "Podest" exhibition of the Faculty of Design on 12.04.24. The interior design was carried out by design student Marie Gowert as part of her Bachelor's thesis. We congratulate Marie on her Podest award for "Best Bachelor Thesis". Once again, many helping hands from Fachhochschule Dortmund were involved with Soffi, many thanks to all of them and especially to Jan Kirchhoff, Volker Hoffmann, Franz Vogler, Yakov Braz and Dec. IV.
Soffi will be the office of the CSR Office and the student Green Office, which is currently being set up, and will be available to students, employees and external guests at the FH locations on an alternating basis. Soffi is intended to be a place of exchange and action in relation to the topics of sustainability and climate protection.
Soffi will also promote the topic of sustainability at public events such as Dortbunt and Juicy Beats in the region.
Sustainability week
We would like to use this issue of Hummelfisch to draw your attention to the upcoming Sustainability Week. From 10.06. - 14.06.24, we have put together a varied program on the topic of sustainability together with TU Dortmund University, the Dortmund student unions and the ASten of the universities. We are offering hands-on activities, discussions, exhibitions and lectures on sustainable mobility, nutrition, consumption and teaching. The detailed program will soon be available on our CSR Office page.
Lecture series on sustainable development
The interdisciplinary lecture series is taking place for the 3rd time and we are delighted about the numerous events from all areas. The series began on April 10 with the CSR Office event "Sustainability and climate protection at the UAS". Every Wednesday at 16:00. You can find the program at https://www.fh-dortmund.de/hochschule/profil/csr-office/ringvorlesung-nachhaltigkeit.php For the first time, we will be holding a panel discussion on 12.06. on the topic of sustainability in university teaching.
