Architecture creates spaces. The quality of architecture shapes our lives.
A long tradition of education and a modern infrastructure for teaching and research are the cornerstones of architecture studies at Fachhochschule Dortmund.
More than almost any other profession, architects combine classical craftsmanship and innovative technologies with social perception in their architectural work. The main content of the practice-oriented and future-oriented architecture degree course is therefore the teaching of a holistic understanding of building culture.
In addition to imparting specialist knowledge and technical understanding, the focus of teaching is on promoting individual personalities - who find their place in the field of activity of architects. For this reason, communication, mutual discussion and independent action, i.e. "research-based learning", are important aspects of training at the university.
The aim of the course is to equip you with the special ability to help shape the ever-changing "urban space" responsibly and with a high level of quality. The degree program therefore offers a broad subject-related foundation as a basis, which later enables many different development opportunities in an increasingly diversified professional field.
In order to guarantee a well-founded and comprehensive education, we offer a 6-semester Bachelor's degree course, which gives you access to the Master's degree course. Completion of the Master's degree then entitles you to join the Chamber of Architects after 2 years of practical experience and the fulfillment of any further requirements.
During your studies, you will have a wide range of opportunities, particularly through international and interdisciplinary courses, to expand your knowledge, make contacts and thus prepare yourself for professional life.
With adapted study plans, the needs of students with care responsibilities (e.g. due to raising children) are specifically addressed.
Communication - proximity between lecturers, staff and students
The open atmosphere of the building is characterized by personal dialogues with dedicated lecturers and staff. Numerous workshops, laboratories and workrooms are at your disposal. The well-equipped IT laboratory enables students to work together in groups as well as receive personal expert counseling. The image lab is the place for experiments, where students gain concrete practical experience in addition to explicit and implicit knowledge in drawing, painting and sculpture experiments. The media laboratory offers space for digital image processing and photography, and in the well-equipped
model-making workshops, students can make their own models to a high standard. In the construction technology laboratories, in addition to the laboratory exercises that take place, students also work together on interesting development and research tasks with the help of lecturers, staff and student assistants.
Sound generalist training as an architect with further training opportunities
Our Faculty of Architecture offers a study program supported by the NRW Chamber of Architects consisting of a 6-semester Bachelor's degree in Architecture and a subsequent 4-semester Master's degree in Resource Architecture. Master's graduates thus fulfill one of the mandatory requirements for obtaining the plan submission authorization and membership in the Chamber of Architects. This guarantees a sound and comprehensive education.
However, the completion of the 6-semester Bachelor's degree program also represents a first professional qualification. Graduates can work for local authorities or architectural firms, for example, without being a member of the Chamber of Architects.
A well-coordinated timetable and intensive teaching enable you to complete your studies within the standard period of study if you work continuously. A wide range of varied design and construction projects as well as numerous scientific and technical modules build on each other and complement each other in teaching.
The challenging topics are practice-oriented and provide vivid insights into the various fields of construction. Workshops, summer academies, lecture series and excursions to current and historical buildings complement lectures and seminars.
Integrated projects and a wide range of compulsory elective modules allow for a broad-based in-depth study or targeted specialization in preparation for the Master's degree courses. Ecological, economic and social aspects form the basis of our sustainable architecture teaching.
After successfully completing the 6-semester Bachelor's degree course, students are awarded a Bachelor of Sciences degree. After successful completion of the 4-semester Master's course, the degree "Master of Science" is awarded.
