Information
Under the theme “Making Energy, Mobility, IT, and AI Resilient—But How?”, the Smart Systems Conference 2026 will bring together experts from academia, business studies, and the professional world at Fachhochschule Dortmund on November 18 and 19.
The focus will be on the resilience and sovereignty of modern technical systems. Discussions will center on how energy supply, mobility, IT infrastructures, and artificial intelligence can remain secure, reliable, and functional even in the face of disruptions, crises, or cyberattacks.
The conference bridges technological developments with concrete applications and current challenges. Topics include resilient energy and distribution grids, safe mobility, cyber resilience, digital sovereignty, trustworthy AI, and the design of resilient and sustainable cities and neighborhoods.
Two Days—Different Perspectives
The program includes keynote speeches, technical presentations, panel discussions, posters, demonstrations, and interactive sessions.
To kick things off, Simone Peter, former president of the German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE), will speak about the prospects for local renewable energy systems and storage in the energy distribution grid.
Other topics on the first day of the conference include resilient distribution grids, electromobility, automotive cybersecurity, and secure IT, cloud, and infrastructure systems. A panel discussion on the challenges facing utility grids and the technical infrastructure of smart cities, followed by a get-together, will round out the day.
The second day of the conference begins with a keynote address by Michael Laskowski of ATOS Information Technology GmbH on the topic “Protecting Critical Infrastructure—Perimeter Security and Drone Detection.” The program will then feature, among other topics, trustworthy edge AI, smart buildings, energy management, and an Institute for Higher Education Didactics on resilient cities and sustainable neighborhoods.
Exchange Between Academia and Professional Practice
The Smart Systems Conference provides a forum for interdisciplinary exchange among academia, industry, the public sector, and other stakeholders. The focus is not only on which technologies are available, but also on how resilient systems can be planned, operated, and further developed under real-world conditions.
Target group
The event is aimed in particular at specialists and executives from the private sector and public administration, researchers and researchers, representatives of local governments and associations, as well as students and university faculty members with an interest in energy, mobility, IT, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and smart city technologies.
