How does the design of the front pages of printed magazines, for example with different image motifs and fonts, affect perception and the incentive to buy? This is what students at the Faculty of Design at Fachhochschule Dortmund have been investigating.
The students of the Editorial Design Master's study program are now presenting their results in a small exhibition: the "Cover Kiosk" will open its doors in the gallery at the FH Max-Ophüls-Platz location from April 28 to May 17, 2023. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm.
On display are covers of high-circulation German consumer magazines as well as lesser-known international indie magazines - some at interactive stations where visitors can submit their own reviews. The exhibition deals with aspects such as the design process as well as the reception by consumers.
Magazine covers are not only the face of a magazine, but also an indispensable tool for attracting the attention of potential buyers. In the best case, the covers arouse curiosity about certain topics and at the same time convey a first impression of the entire publication. In addition, magazine covers, as particularly impressive indicators of visual culture, make an important contribution to the pop-cultural significance of the magazine medium.
The Master's degree program in Editorial Design at Fachhochschule Dortmund is the only design course in the German-speaking world that is completely tailored to magazines and books.
