Recently, there has been a growing number of voices claiming that German soccer is in crisis. However, it is still unclear whether the perception of a crisis from the fans' point of view can claim broader validity and which developments are the cause of this. It is also unclear what reactions fans will have to the perceived crisis. As part of an
online survey of 1,697 soccer fans in Germany, this article addresses these questions. Possible causes for the perception of a crisis (strong commercialization, low integrity of sporting competition and the consideration of fans' interests and opportunities for participation) as well as fans' behaviour (opposition and willingness to leave) are examined in their empirical contexts. As a result, there is a fairly strong crisis from the fans' point of view, although this perception is not influenced by the undesirable developments mentioned (integrity) or only indirectly (commercialization and participation). Furthermore, the perception of a crisis systematically promotes both the perceived need for resistance and the tendency to leave soccer.
