About the project

Intelligent traffic management and the protection of vulnerable road users (VRUs) are necessary to achieve a safe and CO2-neutral city. In 2020, heavier road users caused around 37,000 bicycle accidents and 17,000 pedestrian accidents resulting in personal injury. The reliable detection of all road users and the resulting situation and risk assessment are the basis for achieving these goals.

As part of the VIDETEC-2 project, Fachhochschule Dortmund is working closely with partners IMST, DLR, CGF and TUM to improve traffic safety in urban areas through technological innovation.

Fachhochschule Dortmund specializes in the use of machine learning and target tracking algorithms to effectively detect vulnerable road users (VRUs) and classify critical traffic scenarios. Micro-Doppler radars and Communications Localization Monitoring (CLS) are used for this purpose, techniques that enable precise localization and real-time analysis of road users.

As part of the project, the partners are collecting extensive data sets from real traffic situations, which are essential for training the AI systems.

The results and technologies from the VIDETEC-2 project are directly incorporated into teaching at Fachhochschule Dortmund. The AI systems help to ensure that automated and networked vehicles are able to avoid collisions in urban traffic. By integrating advanced technologies into the urban infrastructure, all partners are jointly contributing to the development of safety strategies for VRUs and increasing road safety.
