Students of the Faculty of Architecture present 52 insect hotels
As part of the impromptu project "We're building a Mayan temple", students from the Faculty of Architecture developed creative yet functional insect hotels. The challenge was to come up with a design that both met the strict technical requirements of the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) and was also aesthetically pleasing.
A total of 52 designs were presented in the foyer of the faculty. The event was accompanied by Prof. Dr. Franz Vogler, Vice-Rector for Sustainability at Fachhochschule Dortmund, and Sebastian Kreimer from the CSR Office, who followed the students' ecological commitment with great interest.
A selection of the particularly successful works will be set up at the Fachhochschule Dortmund's locations, where they will serve as a visible sign of the university's commitment to sustainability. The remaining insect hotels will be donated to kindergartens, schools or other charitable institutions in the region via NABU, if the students so wish, and will be used there to help promote biodiversity.
The campaign impressively demonstrates how design education and social responsibility can go hand in hand and makes it clear that sustainability is an integral part of the thinking and work of architecture students at Fachhochschule Dortmund. The project was initiated by Guido Kollert and Laura Wiederhold.
