Printmaking workshops

Since October 2020, you have had the opportunity to print your student work on a professional 5-color digital printing press. You will learn how to handle color profiles, paper and print data correctly. The machine can fold and staple booklets inline. It is also possible to print with the spot colors white and clear. Everything up to SRA3 format is possible, but banners up to a format of 330 x 700 mm can also be printed. You can bring your own paper or buy it on site. Payment is made by EC card. Arrangements must be made in advance, appointments by e-mail!

Risography is one of the most environmentally friendly printing processes, as the ink is based on soybean oil and the master film is made from hemp fibers. Riso also requires only a fraction of the energy of a digital printing machine. Risography works in a similar way to screen printing in that a master foil is lasered as a stencil and stretched onto the ink drum so that the ink is then transferred to the paper through the lasered foil in a rotating movement. The Risograph combines analog and digital printing technology and makes charming mistakes in the process, such as an imprecise fit and varying ink application. But this is precisely what makes it so aesthetically pleasing and turns every print into a unique piece.

In addition to fine art printing in the photo workshop, we also offer large format printing on slightly different materials. This means that plans, screen printing films, canvases etc. can be printed. The maximum width is 91 cm. The following materials are available:

• Thin drawing paper (for plans, proofs etc.)
• Photo paper 170g semigloss (for posters etc)
• Digital film transparent (for screen printing films)
• Canvas fabric
• Self-adhesive paper (attention, smaller format)

The screen printing workshop offers you the opportunity to create multi-colored screen prints on two screen printing tables, from the production of your own templates to finished multi-colored prints in small runs. A digital film pre-press (up to DIN A1) is available for creating the screens.

The paper workshop offers its services to all students and provides support and counseling in the areas of presentation, exhibition, passe-partout, color and surface, as well as focusing on bookbinding processes for the manual processing of self-printed templates from the printmaking workshops. The following bindings are possible: Perfect binding, ring binding, spiral binding, staple binding and thread stitching in all variations.
We will be happy to provide you with counseling in advance and help you with the bindings.

Wooden frames in various sizes can also be lent from this workshop.

In the printmaking workshops, the classic letterpress processes such as woodcut and linocut, letterpress printing with historical poster fonts, embossing with specially lasered templates from the model-making workshops, as well as all copperplate printing processes can be learned and practiced independently on historical presses. The focus is on an exemplary examination of the elementary forms of manual reproduction.
