On September 15, 2026, as part of the project“Science Meets Fiction—Film & Reflection(Opens in a new tab) ,” we will be screening a film at the Schauburg Dortmund, organized by the Faculty of Applied Social Studies under Prof. Dr. Emra Ilgün-Birhimeoğlu(Opens in a new tab) and Prof. Dr. Dierk Borstel(Opens in a new tab) . The screening will be followed by a moderated discussion with Alexis Rodríguez Suárez and the audience.
The evening combines film with social science analysis. The film will not only be discussed in terms of its content but also used as material to examine social power structures and inequalities more closely. The focus is on issues of anti-queer bias, racism, belonging, and intersectionality: How do different forms of discrimination intertwine? What expectations regarding identity, family, gender, and belonging become apparent? And how does the film explore possibilities for self-determination, resistance, and solidarity?
Together with Alexis Rodríguez Suárez, selected scenes and lines of conflict will be analyzed from a social science perspective. The goal is to apply theoretical concepts to the specific film footage and to discuss how social norms, exclusions, and multiple positions are portrayed in the film.
The project is taking place in cooperation with Sunrise Dortmund(Opens in a new tab) , a youth education and counseling center in Dortmund for all young LGBTPATINQ+ people up to age 23, their families and loved ones, as well as educational staff.
Procedure
- Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
- Start: 6:30 p.m. – Film | short intermission | discussion + Q&A (45 min.)
- Ends at 9:30 p.m.
