What opportunities do graphic and editorial designers have to use their visual skills to make democratic processes visible and tangible? How can design provide impetus for promoting democracy? What spaces for discussion and interaction do people need in their neighborhoods and communities, and how should these be designed? How can a public sphere be created?
Fourteen students from the Faculty of Design at Fachhochschule Dortmund explored these questions and examined them from different perspectives in two seminars. In the collaborative “Designing Democracy” seminars, they conceived, designed, and produced books, magazines, and newspapers focused on individual themes over the course of the 2026 summer semester. The range of topics spans from a child-friendly edition on children’s rights to a publication on the relationship between power and money, and a visual exploration of the Dortmund Port Authority and its future.
The “STADT_RAUM” at the Museum of Art and Cultural History (MKK) is open to the public free of charge.
