Information on the placement test

The placement examination serves as proof of knowledge and skills to the extent of at least one semester, which are required for a successful course of study, but which were acquired in a way other than through a course of study.

Reasons for a placement test

Following the result of the examination, applicants are entitled to begin their studies in a section of the desired study program that corresponds to their level of knowledge.

Since admission to the placement test requires the applicant to meet the qualification requirements in accordance with § 49 HG, if the applicant does not have a higher education entrance qualification within the meaning of § 49 para. 1 to 4 HG, they can first take the entrance examination in accordance with the "Regulations for the admission of professionally qualified applicants to study at Fachhochschule Dortmund" if they are successfully admitted.

If the entrance examination is passed, a placement test can be taken in a further step if placement in a higher semester is possible.

Passing the placement test does not determine admission to the degree program. A separate application for admission must be submitted for this.

The respective admission regulations and the regulations on enrolment remain unaffected by the regulations on the placement test. Proof of special course-related previous education, practical activities, artistic or other aptitude, a previous qualified degree or language skills must also be provided as part of the procedures provided by the faculties concerned.

Exam contents of the placement test

The placement examination is made up of examinations to be selected by the candidate in the number of ECTS credit points that would result in placement in at least the 2nd semester if the placement examination is passed.

To calculate the semester in which the student must be placed, the number resulting from the multiplication of the sum of the credit points proven by the placement test with the standard period of study must be divided by the total volume of ECTS credit points that can be acquired in the respective study program (§ 63a para. 4 HG).

The examination content, form, requirements, assessment and procedure are based on the provisions of the examination regulations of the intended study program. The candidate may also select subjects that are placed in different semesters of the intended degree program according to the study program plan.

The faculty may design a separate placement examination or offer the applicant the opportunity to take part in an examination of the current course of study, insofar as this is possible from an organizational point of view.

Result of the placement test and repetition

The placement test has been passed if the number of ECTS credit points required for placement in at least the 2nd semester has been demonstrated (Section 63a (4) HG NRW).

If examinations are passed to a lesser extent, these will be credited upon application when commencing studies in the first semester.

A certificate will be issued for passing the placement test and for passing examinations as part of a placement test. The certificate contains the grades of the individual achievements, the semester achieved as part of the placement examination and the respective achievements to be credited.
The certificate is to be signed by the chairperson of the examination board and bears the date of the day on which the last examination was taken. The Examination Board will issue a notification of the failed examination with information on legal remedies.

A failed placement examination for a specific study program at Fachhochschule Dortmund can be repeated once. Any parts of the failed placement examination that have been passed will not be credited towards the repeat examination.
