Abstract

Digital transformation initiatives reshape industries, including healthcare organizations, by integrating advanced technologies. These initiatives are known as Digital transformation projects. Their nature and boundary conditions require a robust requirements engineering approach to handle diverse stakeholder groups, regulatory constraints, and organizational needs. Digital transformation projects are complex to manage and introduce significant challenges, particularly in requirements engineering. A common challenge is that customers and developers often use different terminology, which can lead misunderstandings. A case study was conducted within a department of a public hospital in Germany to identify the key RE challenges experienced in healthcare digital transformation projects. Some common issues were the lack of standardized processes, clear documentation, and stakeholder engagement. The article contributes to the research in the field of digital transformation by revealing challenges that practitioners face during the requirements engineering process. Based on the empirical insights we propose (conceptual) recommendations to mitigate these.
