Abstract:
This paper explores the evolving role of AI, particularly embodied AI in the form of humanoid robots, within the creative landscape. While AI's lack of consciousness, subjective experience, and genuine common sense pose fundamental questions about its capacity for autonomous creativity, its potential as a powerful creative tool and collaborative medium for human artists is undeniable. We examine the current convergence of robotics and AI, highlighting how humanlike robots, integrated with generative AI models or multimodal AI, are moving beyond mere imitation and simulation to engage in interactive, seemingly creative performances. These evolving 'robot artists' are not simply executing pre-programmed tasks; they are responding to real-time inputs, generating novel outputs, and ushering critical discussions about the nature of creativity such as novelty and originality, authorship and authenticity, and moreover, the future of human-AI collaboration in the arts. AI robots are increasingly being staged to create various types of art, from paintings and sculptures to music and poetry – exploring computational creativity and co-creation. Through case studies and theoretical considerations, this talk investigates the implications of these recent developments for our understanding of artistic expression and the evolving relationship between humans and increasingly sophisticated AI entities.
