Increasing transparency in the overarching process between order placement by the customer and delivery of the ordered vehicles is a challenging task for which simulation offers new possibilities. Critical challenges on the way to achieving this are the provision of representative orders long before the customers order the vehicles, in the generation of which a large number of rules must be observed, and the complexity of the system to be mapped, which is characterized by a very large number of elements that are interrelated in a variety of ways. Two examples from the automotive industry are used below to illustrate solutions to these challenges and provide an insight into the possibilities of using simulation in this area.
