Hans-Georg Esch’s architectural films differ in a very unique way from other films about architecture.
They do not merely document architecture; they interpret it cinematically. As a trained photographer, Hans-Georg Esch
his eye—honed over decades—to the medium of film, thereby developing an unmistakable visual language.
His perspective allows viewers to experience buildings in terms of their spatial, atmospheric, and design qualities.
Hans-Georg Esch works as a freelance architectural photographer for renowned national and international architectural firms
and is today considered one of the world’s leading figures in his field. Since 1991, he has maintained a close collaboration
with filmmaker Oliver Schwabe. Since 2019 ,Oliver Schwabe has been an adjunct professor of creative television production with a
specializing in documentary film at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne and, since 2021, a professor of film at Fachhochschule Dortmund.
In recent years, in addition to feature films, he has been making documentaries focusing on pop culture themes.
Since 2010, the collaboration between Hans-Georg Esch and Oliver Schwabe has produced numerous architectural films.
A selection of these works is presented in conjunction with the exhibition“Hans Georg Esch – The Architectural Gaze: Epochal – Global”
. The films complement the photographic works by adding the dimensions of movement, time, and space, and offer
further perspective on Esch’s architectural vision.
Hans-Georg Esch and Oliver Schwabe will be present in person for the presentation.
