About the project

Participation as a key factor in educational support

Participation and co-determination are crucial elements of professional educational support in residential child and youth services. Section 4a SGB VIII, ratified in 2021, calls on youth welfare offices to promote self-representation by parents. However, the majority of youth welfare offices have not yet taken action (cf. Strahl, 2024). There are considerable gaps in the research on this topic and the perspective of professionals is still unexplored. Knuth and Krause (2024, 24f) can show that parents are only interested in an active exchange with other parents if they have had positive experiences of belonging in youth welfare services and if parents feel included and well informed by professionals. It is assumed that cooperation with parents depends on the attitude of the professionals and has an impact on the development of parental self-representation.

Recognize and classify attitudes of professionals

Against this background, the EstO project will record and analyze the attitudes of professionals towards parental self-representation. Five semi-structured group discussions will be conducted with home education professionals at different locations. The discussions will form the empirical basis of the study and will subsequently be analyzed using Mayring's qualitative content analysis in order to identify central themes, patterns and lines of argumentation of the professionals.

Developing impulses for the promotion of parental self-representation

The aim of the study is to investigate the professional attitudes of professionals towards parental self-advocacy and to analyze the factors that influence them. The results can provide impulses for the promotion of parent self-advocacy in residential child and youth care and possibly initial indications for recommendations for action. In addition, the project will have an explicit link to teaching on the Bachelor's degree course in Social Work, as students will be able to take part in a specialist day and will be involved in the research.

The EstO project is being carried out at the Fachhochschule Dortmund in the Faculty of Applied Social Studies and is funded by the Fachhochschule Dortmund's internal research funding program (HIFF).
