In this 2nd Hummelfisch newsletter, we have selected three current key topics from our work that we would like to report on:
- Energy saving campaign: It was very successful in 2022 and will therefore be rolled out again this year!
- Common good report: Great joint work with university members, thank you for that and where are we right now?
- Mobility survey: We are in the middle of evaluating the survey - here is a brief interim summary for you.
Energy saving campaign
With the 1st energy saving campaign "Together less...", we pursued the goal last year from October 2022 of enabling all university members to save thermal energy and electricity by changing their behavior. To this end, we developed information, counseling and support services. This campaign was very successful due to the high level of participation by university members.
The 1st energy saving campaign in figures:
- Heat savings of around 20% from October 2022 to January 2023
- 20 campaign stands from November 2022 to January 2023
- More than 150 thermometers, 150 adapter and multiple plugs, 11 timers and 175 stickers were distributed
- 35% less heating energy consumed at the SON in October and November 2022
We will publish the detailed final report on the energy-saving campaign online as soon as we have an accessible version. In this final report, we will look back at what we achieved in the campaign and what savings potential we exploited.
The successful 1st energy-saving campaign will now be rolled out again in mid-October 2023 and actively shaped with various activities until the closing time. In key words:
- There will be information stands and material.
- There will also be power strips and adapter plugs with switches again.
- We are drawing up checklists for energy-saving measures in offices, laboratories and seminar rooms.
- At Energiesparen@fh-dort Energiesparenfh-dortmundde, all members of the university can give tips on potential savings, order campaign material and contribute ideas.
With this in mind: please keep up the good work! Your participation is once again crucial to the success of the 2nd Energy Saving Campaign.
Report on the common good
Fachhochschule Dortmund is the second university in Germany and the first university in North Rhine-Westphalia to take the first step towards public value accounting.
In February 2023, we started the public value process with a kick-off event. This was followed by 11 workshops until May 2023, in which over 150 people took part. Over 170 suggestions for improvement were identified and developed in the workshops and in many discussions, ranging from small, easy-to-implement measures to major strategic goals. These were presented to the university management at a further meeting. The willingness of university members to participate in this public value process was extremely high.
The completed common good report is now available for review by the auditors. On 10.11.2023, they will come to Fachhochschule Dortmund for a visit audit, conduct it and probably award us the "Public Value-oriented University" certificate.
We will then look ahead and try to implement the many potential improvements identified in the workshops. We will also develop training measures with the perspective management team to enable all employees to take social and ecological aspects into account in their work.
The process of balancing the common good has thus been successfully initiated - thank you to everyone for this! In the future, we would like to continuously expand Fachhochschule Dortmund's focus on the common good. We look forward to further exchanges with you.
Mobility survey
A total of 575 people, including 301 employees and 274 students, took part in the mobility survey of members of Fachhochschule Dortmund, which was conducted between 21/04/23 and 14/06/23. In terms of locations, 200 people were assigned to the Sonnenstraße location, 305 to Emil-Figge-Straße and 41 to Max-Ophüls-Platz.
Here is some interesting data on the mobility behavior of Fachhochschule Dortmund employees:
The distance traveled to work by members ranges from 0 to 503 km. However, as we are primarily interested in daily mobility at the university, we have limited the realistic commuting radius to a maximum of 150 km. This showed that employees in administration and technology live closest to the university, at an average of 15.84 km. Students commute significantly longer at 25.06 km and employees in research and teaching at 25.66 km on average. In terms of locations, the commute to work is shortest for members of staff at Sonnenstraße at 19.66 km on average. Members of the University of Applied Sciences at the Max-Ophüls location cover slightly more distance on average at 21.92 km and - unsurprisingly - the journey to Emil-Figge-Straße is the longest at 25.26 km on average.
This is just a brief and brief summary. As soon as the evaluation of the survey has been completed and all the results are available, the results will be presented and published for all to see.
