According to the jury, the design by the Dortmund students creates a subtle extension of the previously cleaned-up petrol station body with a classic extension.

Success for architecture students at Fachhochschule Dortmund in the renowned student competition "Dachwelten 2025"! Under the direction of Prof. Christine Remensperger and Lorena Castell Alegria, the team led by Luisa Demmer, Phillipp Haßmann, Lea Kattenbeck and Tim Schönfeldt won the competition with their design "Kraftstoff Würzburg" and was awarded 2nd prize and 3,500 euros.

Task definition

This year, the task was to develop a concept for an existing filling station located directly opposite the museum building (Kulturspeicher) in Würzburg. The challenge was to rethink the body of the filling station. What uses can be integrated if the building is transformed through construction and extension strategies, for example through roof shapes, upper floors or other design interventions? In the inspiring rooms of the museum, eight interdisciplinary teams from a total of ten universities developed their concepts in an impromptu format within just six hours, surrounded by art and a creative atmosphere.

Comment of the jury

"The work 'Kraftstoff Würzburg' creates a subtle extension of the previously cleaned-up petrol station body with a classic extension. An animated roof landscape of differentiated pitched roofs provides spatial qualities for a variety of uses on the new upper floor. The area below offers access and quality of stay, also because the skylight of the old petrol station is inserted as a quotation."

For the first time since the coronavirus pandemic, Dachwelten 2025 took place entirely in person. This meant that direct encounters and intensive exchanges between students, lecturers and industry partners were once again possible. An important part of the competition, which thrives on lively discourse and spontaneous ideas.
