Profile
Various methods for characterizing plastics and metallic materials are available in the materials testing laboratory.
Using two tensile testing machines, important mechanical parameters such as modulus of elasticity, strength and elongation can be determined for plastics and metallic samples.
The hardness of plastics can be determined using a Shore hardness tester. Vickers, Brinell and Rockwell C testers are available for testing the hardness of metallic materials. Small load hardness tests can also be carried out.
Notched bar impact systems for testing toughness are also available. For space reasons, the system for metallic samples is located in B308 (surface technology).
Thanks to a flexible suction device, burning tests can also be carried out in the plastics laboratory to determine the material properties of plastics.
The materials testing laboratory is mainly used for teaching purposes as part of the materials technology practical course (Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering) and the basic practical course (Bachelor of Vehicle Development). Tests are also carried out as part of student work and projects, such as the development of additively manufactured components.
