Profile

In the Lean Lab, modern assembly systems and production concepts are made tangible in a practical way. Using the assembly of a small-volume product, we show how manual assembly systems can be flexibly configured and linked in terms of material flow. Digital assistance and collaboration systems illustrate how Industry 4.0 technologies can additionally support and improve manual assembly. The focus is on practical experience: students and partner companies can not only learn about lean methods and digitalization in theory, but also apply, evaluate and further develop them themselves. The aim is to make the principles of lean production and the digital factory tangible and thus create a deep understanding of how efficient, future-oriented production systems are designed.

Leonie Potthoff, research assistant in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, introduces the Lean Lab.

Service & Offer

For students

The Lean Lab can be used for students' final theses and project work. Students can work on practical tasks by examining the topic from a scientific perspective and then putting their developed concept into practice in the laboratory.

For companies

What do we offer?

  • Workshops to impart theoretical and practical knowledge on the design of production systems and workplaces as well as the methodology of lean management. This includes 5S, one-piece flow, ergonomics, store floor management, standardization, value stream management, zero-defect principle, digitalization and much more
  • Practical implementation of the lean management methodology in our lean lab as a learning, simulation and test environment for companies
  • Counselling for companies that want to reorganize or optimize their production system in line with lean management thinking
  • Support with the digitalization of production processes and the introduction of Industry 4.0 technologies
  • Research and development cooperation with companies as well as application for and implementation of funded research and development projects
  • Marketing for our cooperation partners: students and companies get to know your product and your company in a realistic application environment in the Lean Lab.

Lean Escape Room

In the Lean Escape Room of the Lean Lab, participants can experience lean production in a playful and interactive way. In small teams, they solve exciting puzzles on the topics of waste, standardization, visualization and digitalization and apply central lean principles directly in the process. The Escape Room has a modular structure and can be flexibly adapted to different target groups, from school pupils to Bachelor's and Master's students. Teamwork, analytical thinking and communication are key to optimizing the production process and finding the way "out of the room". Lean basics are taught in a practical and motivating way, with a guaranteed "aha" effect.
