Laboratory for embedded systems

Fast facts

Profile

The Laboratory for Embedded Systems combines research and teaching on practical, future-oriented topics in hardware and software development. We offer students an environment for designing, implementing and evaluating embedded systems - from HDL-based FPGA design to low-resource machine learning models for microcontrollers.

Focal points

  • FPGA based chip design
Implementation of digital circuits in HDL, prototyping on FPGA boards, verification and performance-oriented optimization.
  • Microprocessor technology
Architecture, pipeline design, interfaces and implementation of customized processor functions for special applications.
  • Microcontroller
Embedded software development, peripheral control, real-time behavior, energy management and secure firmware development.
  • 3D printing
Rapid prototyping of housings and mechanical components, integration of printed components into system prototypes and design optimization for manufacturability.

Internships and courses

  • Microcontroller technology - summer semester
Practice-oriented laboratory: peripherals, interrupts, real-time tasks, measurement tasks and a final project experiment.
  • Signal processing - winter semester
Theory and practice of digital signal processing with implementation tasks on signal processors and microcontrollers as well as measurement and evaluation tasks.
  • IT project - winter semester
Team project with industry-relevant tasks: System specification, architecture design, implementation, testing and presentation.

Equipment

Equipment and learning environment

  • Hardware: modern FPGA development boards, various microcontroller families, DSP kits, measuring and debugging equipment.
  • Manufacturing: 3D printer for prototyping and housing development.
  • Software: Toolchains for HDL, embedded C/C++, RTOS, ML toolkits for TinyML and tools for performance analysis.
  • Project work and theses are welcome; we offer support with topic selection, lab time and access to hardware.
