Fachhochschule Dortmund has renewed its cooperation agreements with six schools in Dortmund. This means that the "Brückenprojekt Mathematik" can continue to support upper secondary school students at grammar schools, comprehensive schools and vocational colleges and help them prepare for a degree course in the WiMINT field - in Business Studies, Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences and Technology.

Trained tutors from Fachhochschule Dortmund teach in weekly sessions at the participating schools - at eye level with the students, in a relaxed atmosphere and without exams. "We teach math knowledge beyond the school curriculum to make it easier for pupils to start their studies," explains Devin Kunze, coordinator of the bridge project at Fachhochschule Dortmund.

"Our goal is to reduce the number of students dropping out of university due to challenges in mathematics," explained Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel, Rector of Fachhochschule Dortmund, at the signing of the contract. "This is why we have been working together with Dortmund schools since the 2017/18 school year in the mathematics bridge project." The bridge project was launched with the regional education office of the city of Dortmund.

Stable foundation

With the new contracts, Fachhochschule Dortmund is putting the cooperation on a stable footing and securing the tutor program for at least three more school years. At the same time, it will be easier to include more schools in the project. The partner schools provide the classrooms and select the participants. Fachhochschule Dortmund trains and pays the tutors, who all come from Bachelor's study programs with a high proportion of mathematics. In addition to in-depth math skills, the participants also receive access to Fachhochschule Dortmund's digital learning platform ILIAS. "The joint commitment to the Mathebrücken project is extremely important for us in order to prepare the students for their studies in the best possible way," says Devin Kunze. "That's why we would like to thank our long-standing partner schools."

These six partner schools are to be followed by further collaborations. Interested schools can write to mintfh-dortmundde  Participation in the Brückenprojekt Mathematik is free of charge and voluntary for pupils.
