New lounge on Sonnenstrasse

Published

Reading, studying, laissez-faire - the new "BibLounge" next to the library on Sonnenstraße offers many opportunities for students and employees.

New tables and chairs, simple but stylish, furnish the front half of the room. Thanks to their castors, they can be quickly rearranged for study groups or individuals. A screen and projector are available for presentations at workshops and training courses.

The different areas are separated on the one hand by artificial plants and on the other by acoustic elements that absorb a little noise. Decorative acoustic panels also hang on the walls.

From the tall artificial plant stalks and the pretty sound absorbers in the middle of the room to the windows, there is artificial turf; to the right, a generous sofa group offers space to think, breathe and chat. On the left is the foosball table, an extra quiet model, the cork ball is available for a deposit at the service counter. There is also a DeskBike, which uses muscle power to generate electricity for charging smartphones and other devices.

The library's former PC pool and library classroom at the Sonnenstraße location has been used less and less in recent years. Most research training for the Faculties of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Information Technology at Sonnenstraße now takes place online. In the UAS buildings, students increasingly preferred other places inside and outside the library to study.

Employees and students tested the lounge extensively at the inauguration event.

The new look of the space was developed by five library employees. "We didn't want a sober, quiet learning space, but a versatile place to spend time," explained librarian Johanna Munkelt at the official inauguration on March 20, 2025. The artificial turf carpet and the shades of green, blue and grey create a harmonious overall picture. "The space now looks much brighter and more inviting than before," says Johanna Munkelt. "We hope that students and employees will feel comfortable here and appreciate the relaxed atmosphere."

Anyone who would like to try it out can drop by at any time during library opening hours and without prior booking. The "BibLounge" can be found in room A207.
