With the Eugenie and Felix Wachsmann Innovation Awards 2025, the German Radiology Society has recognized outstanding projects that provide exemplary impetus for teaching, training and technological development in radiology. Prof. Christoph M. Friedrich from the Faculty of Computer Science was also honored for the additional qualification "Artificial Intelligence (Q1)", which deals with the responsible use of AI in everyday clinical practice.
Prof. Friedrich is part of an interdisciplinary team that is responding to the growing importance of AI in radiology with a forward-looking training concept. The initiative teaches practical skills for the safe, well-founded and responsible use of AI-supported software in everyday clinical practice - and thus addresses a central challenge of modern imaging. The modular training is aimed equally at radiologists, medical physicists and medical technologists in radiology and, with offerings such as the interactive InstaRad course and a live course from the DRG's Information Technology Working Group, focuses on a medical-scientific foundation and independence from industrial interests. A close connection to professional society memberships ensures a high level of quality and integrity.
With this comprehensive and inclusive qualification approach, the award winners - including experts from the fields of medicine, technology, physics and ethics - have, in the opinion of the jury, created a strong basis for shaping the integration of AI in radiology not only technically, but also ethically and professionally responsibly. Their commitment contributes significantly to patient safety, state-of-the-art training and the future viability of the discipline.
