Best Paper Award for FH doctoral student

Published

The European Microwave Association has awarded the Best Paper Award to a paper by first author Moritz Kahlert, a doctoral student in the cooperative doctoral program between Fachhochschule Dortmund and Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus.

The paper is about an automotive radar that is to be used for environmental perception in autonomous driving. The paper was presented and honored at the German Microwave Conference (GeMiC) in Duisburg. This is regarded as one of the most important specialist conferences in the dynamic scientific field of microwave technology. It serves as an important platform for the exchange of the latest research results and technologies.

Moritz Kahlert is currently investigating a new waveform, the Phase Modulated Continuous Wave (PMCW), for his doctoral project. The classic implementation of PMCW not only requires fast analog-to-digital converters (ADC), but also a lot of storage space for the data. This leads to expensive hardware for the radar. The paper presents the development of a special form of PMCW that reduces the ADC and memory requirements.

Team of authors

In addition to doctoral student Moritz Kahlert, Dr. Tai Fei from the Faculty of Information Technology at Fachhochschule Dortmund was also involved in the paper, and the co-authors include Claas Tebrugge from the company Forvia and Prof. Markus Gardill from the Department of Electronic Systems and Sensor Technology (ESS) at BTU Cottbus. The title of the paper is "An Improved Stepped-Frequency PMCW Waveform for Automotive Radar Applications".
