An anniversary at the Faculty of Business Studies at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts: the Business Event took place for the tenth time at the end of June. Students meet regional companies, national corporations - and at the same time many former UAS students.
This is because the companies' stands were often staffed by graduates of the university who now work for these companies. The best conditions for talking to Fachhochschule Dortmund students and finding out about career paths and entry opportunities. "For students, especially those in their first semesters, the business event is a good opportunity to get to know companies and gain an overview of the professional fields that are possible with a business degree," says Prof. Dr. Martin Kißler, professor of economics at the UAS and co-organizer of the career fair.
Direct contact with the students is also very important for the companies. Falko Eßer, authorized signatory of rku.it GmbH from Herne, says: "The UAS business event enables us to identify talent at an early stage and promote it through internships, working student positions and final theses." Students in the higher semesters benefit from this professional network, they can obtain job offers or find out about employers in personal discussions.
In addition, Fachhochschule Dortmund's Career Service offered an application portfolio check and the university's start-up service answered questions about self-employment and alternative career paths.
"This direct line to companies is what sets us apart as a university of applied sciences," emphasizes Prof. Kißler. At the Faculty, science and Business Studies are a well-coordinated team, for example in the so-called case studies. Here, UAS students pitch their ideas for specific challenges faced by companies. These real cases give the students practical insights into Business Studies; the companies benefit from the students' fresh and unconventional ideas.
A highlight of the anniversary edition of the business event was the keynote speech by DFB referee Dr. Arne Aarnink on the topic of "What (prospective) managers can learn from professional referees". The exciting analysis of the parallels between soccer and management inspired many students and provided new impetus for their own career paths.
The business event is organized by the faculty's practice office. "Personnel changes have also presented us with challenges this year," reports Prof. Kißler. "That's why I would like to personally thank Björn Müller, a student employee in the Practice Office, whose commitment has contributed a great deal to the success of this anniversary business event." Many of the companies have already confirmed their participation in the 11th edition next year.
Falko Eßer from rku.it GmbH will also be taking part again. "Fachhochschule Dortmund gave me the tools I needed and prepared me perfectly for my professional career," he says. "Personally, I think it's very important for future students to be able to benefit from the 'success of the old hands from the field', which we owe to Fachhochschule Dortmund."
